The Make Way for Ducklings book was published in 1941 as an endearing story of a mallard family looking for a home to raise their ducklings. Each spring in the Public Garden, we watch this story come to life. The Parks Department gardening staff- among countless other tasks – often find themselves protecting these little creatures as duck’s don’t always make the most prudent decisions. In one case, Mrs. Mallard decided to build her nest in one of the large flower beds by the Washington Monument. Much less safe than the island and causing Paul from the Garden crew to keep careful watch and build protecting branches around her day in and day out. To his great pleasure, she safely gave birth to 7 little ones and he captured their first trip to the water.
